How to Update Your Meta Quest 3s

If your VR goggles haven't connected to wifi in a while, it can miss important operating system updates.

How to check for an update

  1. Put on your goggles and go to Settings > General > Software update.
  2. Make sure your goggles are connected to wifi.
  3. Make sure you're not in the middle of using the goggles for anything else.

Tip: Plug your goggles into its charger before starting. This keeps it from powering off in the middle of the update.

While the update downloads

  • You'll see a message that says "Downloading update."
  • It's safe to press the power button once to put the goggles to sleep — the download will keep going in the background as long as it's still connected to wifi.
  • Download time depends on your internet speed, so keep an eye on progress if you're on a slower connection.

How to know it worked

Once the update finishes, check back in Settings > General > Software update. If you see "You are up to date!", the update installed successfully.

Why this matters

These updates matter because they include:

  • Performance improvements
  • Security fixes
  • Bug fixes

If your goggles fall too far behind on updates, you may lose access to certain system features, since they may no longer work with the older operating system version. The same goes for apps — some apps need the latest OS version to run properly.

Turn on automatic updates (recommended)

To avoid running into this issue again, turn on these automatic update settings:

  • Software updates
  • Automatically power goggle to update
  • Update and backup before shutdown

With these turned on, your goggle will stay current without you needing to check for updates manually.
